McKinlay Shire, the heart of Outback Queensland and Gateway to the Gulf of Carpentaria, comprises four main townships, Julia Creek, Nelia, McKinlay and Kynuna. Situated on the Overlander’s Way, Julia Creek is approximately 650 km west of Townsville and 250 kilometres east of Mount Isa.

By Road

Julia Creek and Nelia are situated on the Flinders Highway (Overlander’s Way) between Townsville and Mt Isa. It is approximately 650 km west of Townsville and 250 km east of Mount Isa. This is a sealed, double lane highway accessible to all vehicles during the dry season.

Kynuna and McKinlay are situated on the Landsborough Highway (Matilda Way) between Longreach and Cloncurry. This is a sealed, double lane highway accessible to all vehicles during the dry season.

By Air

Regional Express Airlines (REX) is the only commercial air service available in McKinlay Shire. REX offers regular flight services every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Julia Creek to Townsville, Mount Isa, Hughenden and Richmond. 

Cloncurry Airport is an hour and a half drive from Julia Creek and offers regular QantasLink and Alliance Airlines flights to Townsville, Mount Isa, Cairns and Brisbane.

By Rail

Queensland Rail offer a twice weekly Inlander rail service between Townsville and Mount Isa. For more information visit Queensland Rail.
