Cloncurry is located in northwest Queensland, Australia, approximately 770 kilometers west of Townsville and 120 kilometers east of Mount Isa. It is situated along the Flinders Highway and the Great Northern Railway, making it an important regional hub in Queensland’s outback.
Cloncurry lies within the North West Minerals Province, a mineral-rich area that has historically been significant for mining, and it is surrounded by large cattle grazing stations.
Cloncurry is well-connected by highways and is a key stop on two major outback routes:
- Flinders Highway (Overlander's Way): This highway connects Townsville on the east coast to Cloncurry and Mount Isa in the west. The drive from Townsville to Cloncurry takes about 8 to 9 hours.
- Matilda Highway: This route runs north-south and connects Cloncurry to Karumba in the north and Cunnamulla in the south. Driving from Cloncurry to Karumba takes around 4.5 to 5 hours.
Cloncurry Airport offers regular QantasLink and Alliance Airlines flights to Townsville, Mount Isa, Cairns and Brisbane.
Mount Isa Airport is 1 hour and 30 minutes’ drive from Cloncurry and services a broad range of regional airlines with bus link from Mount Isa to Cloncurry and a Cloncurry Airport Shuttle Bus.
